UBC Journalism students nominated for CAJ awards



Children in JordanSeveral projects by current students and graduates of the UBC School of Journalism have been nominated for the Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. The awards recognize outstanding investigative journalism in Canada published or broadcast in 2015.

The Out of the Shadows project, a major investigation into mental health care in the developing world was nominated for the JHR/CAJ Award for Human Rights Reporting.

Ten students and faculty supervisors travelled to West Africa, the Middle East and India for UBC Journalism’s International Reporting Program to report on how families are forced to resort to desperate measures to help loved ones with mental illness where no facilities exist to diagnose or treat them.

The multimedia project was published in part by the New York Times. A further documentary drawing on material gathered by the students was broadcast by Al Jazeera.

Recent grad Chantelle Bellrichard was part of a CBC News team nominated for a CAJ Award in the Online Media category for Missing and Murdered: Unsolved Cases of Indigenous Women and Girls. The project was also recently awarded a Canadian Hillman Prize and Canadian Screen Award.

Alumna Krysia Collyer was nominated for a CWA Canada/CAJ Award for Labour Reporting Code White, a Global 16X9 and Toronto Star investigation into nurses facing violence on the job.

Alumna Leslie Young was nominated for a CAJ/Marketwired Data Journalism Award for Abortions for Some, a Global News project on how access to abortion in Canada depends on where you live.

The CAJ Awards will be announced May 28 at the annual awards gala and conference banquet, which takes place this year in Edmonton.
