Two students win national CBC scholarships

Two second-year students, Krysia Collyer (‘09) and Anna Fong (’09), were awarded two out of a total of seven Joan Donaldson Scholarships for Summer 2009. The other five winners came from Ryerson, Concordia and St. Thomas.

Each Donaldson Scholar receives a cash award of $2,000, training and an intensive four-month paid internship at one or more locations within CBC Newsworld. Past Donaldson Scholars have contributed to CBC programs such as Canada Now, The National, Newsworld Today and CBC News Sunday. Winners have tested their abilities in chase production, field production and TV news writing. Many have earned permanent jobs as CBC journalists — on camera and behind-the-scenes.

Collyer interned at Canada’s highest-rated national newscast, Global National, with Kevin Newman in Summer 2008. She recently completed a documentary on the Canadian health system for Dan Rather Reports as part of a team project in Advanced Broadcast led by Peter Klein.  Her journalism interests include: Canadian politics, human rights issues and sports. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communications from the University of Ottawa.

Fong interned with CTV News anchor Steve Murphy and his team in Halifax in Summer 2008. She received the UBC Science Journalism Scholarship in her first year of the program and now holds a CIHR Health Communications Award in her final year.
