Dr. Michelle Stack, UBC Associate Professor, will present a talk on academic-media engagement on Oct. 20 at the Coach House, Green College, 6201 Cecil Green Park Road, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.
From public intellectuals to academic bloggers and science communicators, the academy is playing new roles in the media. This series of talks at Green College explores the opportunities and challenges of academic-media engagement as an important site of university knowledge transfer and exchange.
Considered a gateway to wider public communication, policy makers and funders, these engagements also bring significant tensions. Whose voices are heard? How does popularizing affect research? How can knowledge be represented in meaningful ways for diverse audiences? What are UBC researchers, nationally and internationally, doing to expand discussion of social, environmental and health issues through engagements with media?
Dr. Stack’s research areas include media, policy and education. She has worked as a political adviser, communications director and consultant. She was the first Communications Director for the former office of the BC Children’s Commission. She is interested in using her research to work with other academics and journalists to create synergies that would ultimately inform public debates about the uses of research in relation to wider issues of policy.
There is an optional dinner provided after the talk. Please contact Green College at 604-822-8660 for reservations.
