Prof Alfred Hermida will be giving a public talk on the impact of social media on news on Wednesday, March 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at the Victoria Theatre, Room #182, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, UBC.
The lecture, News Beyond Journalism: Social Media and the Recurring Rhythms of Storytelling, will look at how social media marks a shift away from a 20th century convention when news became the exclusive domain of professional journalists.
Prof Hermida will explore how we are sharing more material from more sources with more people, more often and more quickly than ever before. Join him to find out how social media is rewriting the rules on who we get the news from and what kind of news we get.
The talk is part of the Celebrate Research Lunchtime Lecture Series, featuring researchers who have won significant internal awards. Lectures are free and are open to the public and all members of the campus community.
Prof. Hermida is the 2011 recipient of the President’s Award for Public Education Through Media.
