Journalism profs among Vancouver’s top 20 web influencers

Professors from the UBC Graduate School of Journalism make up 10% of NowPublic’s MostPublic Index which identifies the web’s 20 most visible individuals in Vancouver.

Alfred Hermida

Assistant professor Alfred Hermida ranked number 13 for his online presence, including his blog Reportr.net. Adjunct professor David Beers, who runs the news website The Tyee, was ranked number 19.

The list was published in partnership with the Vancouver Sun. It is a barometer of the voices most heard in the digital landscape as new channels such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube transform how media is created and spread.

Previously, NowPublic identified and announced the MostPublic influencers in New York, Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.

NowPublic, the world’s largest participatory news network, uses a formula to measure influence and “publicness” across four categories. These include online visibility, presence on user-generated content and social networking sites, interactivity and accessibility, and presence on microblogging platforms.

David Beers

Mary Lynn Young, associate professor and director of the School of Journalism, said: “I want to congratulate both Alfred and David for their hard work and insightful commentary. As public intellectuals, their voices are making a significant difference in their areas.”

Leonard Brody, CEO of NowPublic, said: “Vancouver, the home of NowPublic, is the Canadian hub for new media and by far one of the most innovative cities in North America.  It is with great pleasure that we team up with the Vancouver Sun to identify and recognize those, locally, who are most impacting the global media landscape.”
