Three students at the Graduate School of Journalism will be on their way to Washington, D.C. in September to cover the conference of the Online News Association.
The ONA conference is the premier event for those who work in, or have an interest in, online media and news.
The students, Allison Cross, Stephanie Lim and Cynthia Yoo, are halfway through the two-years Masters of Journalism program at the University of British Columbia.
The three won scholarships to serve in the ONA student newsroom during the annual conference to be held September 11-13 at the Capitol Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C..
The ONA conference offers a student newsroom every year in which budding journalists receive hands-on learning, mentoring and deadline multimedia experience. Participants are given free conference registration and hotel accommodation. This year, the students will also go on a tour of the Washington Post Newsweek Interactive newsroom.
Allison Cross has worked at the Nanaimo Daily News, the Globe and Mail, The Tyee and the Vancouver Sun. Her interests include print and interactive online media that addresses environmental issues, health care, women’s rights and social justice.
Stephanie Lim is currently an interning as an editor at Global News Toronto. Her research interests include digital literacy, and technology in education. She holds a B.A. Honours in English Literature and French Minor and spent a year in Japan teaching English.
Cynthia Yoo is spending her summer working as an editor at OhmyNews International. She has focused her research and work in citizen media law and participatory media, working at participatory media outlets such as OhmyNews, NowPublic and The Tyee.
