imageMary Lynn Young, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Journalism and former Globe & Mail national business columnist, has been named Director of the UBC Graduate School of Journalism.  Young is one of the founding professors of the program, with an award-winning academic and prominent journalistic career.

She envisions major changes in how journalism is practiced and taught over the next decade, and plans to develop the graduate school into one of North America’s most innovative and influential journalism programs.

“I am privileged to be leading a School with such a high calibre of academics, staff and students,” said Dr. Young.  “This is an exciting time for media and we are in a great position to contribute to its future.”

She will direct the School’s leading edge approach to multi-platform journalism in both global and local contexts, based on a team-teaching model that involves faculty from such respected media worldwide as the BBC, CBS News’ 60 Minutes, the CBC and Canwest, as well as independent media including TheTyee.ca

Building on UBC’s position among the top 50 universities in the world, the School will enhance its knowledge-based curriculum with specialties in international, online, science and high-definition broadcast journalism.

Dr. Young is a recognized authority on gender and the media, newsroom sociology, content analysis and media credibility, with a journalistic background in metropolitan daily newspapers in Canada and the United States.  She is also an award-winning educator and is involved in the community as a board member of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.
