Graduating UBC Journalism student Linda Givetash has been awarded the Aga Khan Foundation Canada Young Professionals in Media Fellowship and will spend eight months reporting in Uganda beginning in August.

Linda was an International Reporting Program (IRP) fellow in 2014 and was part of a team reporting on mental illness and prayer camps in West Africa. She spent her internship component of the program working at News24 in Cape Town, South Africa in the summer of 2014.

“I’m really honoured to have been chosen as a fellow by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada and Nation Media Group,” Linda said.

The Aga Khan Young Professionals in Media Fellowship is a program that allows Canadian journalists to work with Nation Media Group outlets in Africa. Linda will work at The Daily Monitor, a newspaper in Kampala, Uganda’s capital. Linda’s research and reporting has focused on health.

Linda credited her work with the International Reporting Program with building her skills and confidence in reporting abroad. “After taking part in IRP, I’ve learned the impact of global reporting and sharing stories for a global audience,” she said.

“IRP prepared me for a lot. I have the confidence to do this now because of that experience.”
