Talk: Prof. Callison on spinning climate change

imagePlease join us 5-6:30pm on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Green College Coach House on UBC campus as journalism professor Candis Callison speaks on “Spinning climate change, vernaculars and emergent forms of life.”

Professor Callison will complicate the notion that discovering objective facts and sharing scientific information will inspire action in democracies. Her research has explored the ways in which information is interpreted and discussed within five distinct social groups, including leading science journalists.

The line between what Bruno Latour calls “matters of fact” and “matters of concern” is anything but straightforward. Challenges include using media as a platform for public discourse, as well as understanding and including diverse systems of meaning-making, ethics, and morality.

Professor Callison’s talk will provide insight into how Americans within five social and professional groups are translating, transforming, and re-articulating climate change for a diverse citizenry and wider publics.
