Lisa Johnson, graduate of the UBC School of Journalism, has been named CBC News Vancouver’s environment reporter, working across TV, radio and online.
“We know from our audience research over the past year that people rank the environment very high on their news menu and Lisa will be answering that need,” said Liz Hughes, News Director of CBC British Columbia.
Johnson has an Honours degree (UBC ‘02) in Ecology and Environmental Biology, and specialized in science reporting at the UBC School of Journalism.
Earlier this fall, Johnson was the lead reporter on the CBC News series Feeling the Heat, which examined the B.C. government’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
In this new role, Johnson will continue to report on all platforms, including the local television newscast, CBC News Vancouver at six, radio news and cbc.ca/bc.
She has previously reported for CBC News in Vancouver, Toronto, and Nelson, B.C., and helped produce CBC Radio’s national environment show hosted by Ian Hanomansing in 2007. Her first internship at CBC was on the award-winning science program, Quirks & Quarks.
At the School of Journalism, Johnson received the CIHR Science Writer Scholarship, and the Hal Straight Gold Medal in Journalism, which is awarded each year to the most outstanding graduate. She is a member of the School’s Board of Advisors.
Students at the School of Journalism learn the grammar and syntax of media across platforms. They gain hands-on experience in a simulated multimedia environment, working in text, images, audio, video, graphics and Web 2.0 tools.
