Alumni Showcase: Aaron Goodman (’01) and Ian Bickis (’09)



The school’s alumni have been employed in a variety of capacities in the last year, with former students finding placements in both teaching and reporting careers.

After 10 years reporting and teaching across Southeast and South Asia, Aaron Goodman (‘01) now works as assistant professor in the Journalism program at Wilfrid Laurier University in Brantford, Ontario, where he teaches video and journalism, documentary production, and journalism theory courses.

His research focuses on how personal testimonies and narratives in conflict and post-conflict societies can support reconciliation and peace-building, and bolster investigative journalism practices.

Aaron is an award-winning video and radio journalist, documentary producer and writer. He specializes in international human rights and investigative journalism. His stories have been broadcast by PBS Frontline, CBC, CNN, SBS Dateline, Associated Press Television News and Agence France Press Television. His writing has been published by Reuters, the National Post, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, and others.

Ian Bickis (‘09) was recently hired as a writer for The Northern Miner, a weekly newspaper focused on the global mining industry.  His job has so far taken him to the Philippines, Alaska, Sweden and throughout western North America visiting prospective mine sites.

While he does not have a mining background, his experience in business news has helped guide his writing. He has also used multimedia to tell business stories, including photos, audio slideshows and video.

At UBC, his Master’s thesis focused on the decline of the forestry industry in small-town British Columbia. He was part of the International Reporting class that recently won an Emmy award in the Investigative Journalism category.

He has been published in The Globe and Mail, The Vancouver Sun, Business in Vancouver Newspaper and BC Business Magazine online, and has worked with PBS Frontline World, CBC television and CBC radio.
