UBC journalism grad wins ONA award for News21 project



Allison GrinerUBC Journalism graduate Allison Griner has won an Online Journalism Award as part of the News21 team that produced Gun Wars, an in-depth analysis of the debate over gun control in the U.S.

The award was announced at the Online Journalism Awards dinner held September 26 in Los Angeles.

The awards recognize excellence in digital journalism across the world. The News21 Gun Wars project won in the category of Student Projects, Pro-Am.

UBC Journalism director, Alfred Hermida, was nominated in the category of online commentary (small). The award went to Marcell Shehwaro, a Syrian blogger who documented life in the city of Aleppo for Global Voices.

The awards are the climax of the annual Online News Association conference, an annual gathering of journalists, media executives, technologists and academics interested in emerging practices in digital news, technology trends and industry developments.

Canadian university first

News21 brings together reporters, videographers and photojournalists from universities to collaborate on an investigative project.

Allison was the first recipient of the prestigious News21 fellowship from a Canadian university when she was selected as a fellow in 2014.

The following year, another of our students, Emi Sasagawa, was named a News21 fellow. She worked on a News21 project on marijuana legalization in the U.S.

News21 is based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
