UBC Journalism’s latest project, “CUT,” was featured on the December 20th broadcast of CTV’s flagship primetime news show Kevin Newman Live. In the introduction, host Kevin Newman said “The International Reporting Program at UBC’s Graduate School of Journalism has earned a reputation for groundbreaking undercover and investigative work that we’re proud to bring you tonight.”

CUT represents a year-long examination into the environmental and social costs of the global logging industry. Newman demonstrated highlights from the multimedia project, which was both reported and designed by a team of UBC Journalism students. The site is highly interactive, and features a typical apartment filled with various wood products. Clicking on any of the products launches a video segment, showcasing stories of where that wood came from, and an in-depth report on the environmental and social costs of illegal logging.
“This site beat out several major news organizations for the best multimedia feature in the country’s top online publishing award this year,” Newman continues. After playing a segment of the multimedia documentary, Newman invited UBC Journalism graduate Lucas Powers, who worked on the project, to discuss the content of the site and new developments in the story.
CUT was made possible with a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. It was produced in partnership with the Liu Institute for Global Studies, the Centre for Digital Media and International University in Moscow.
