The CBC-UBC student-led project to create a Canadian music online encyclopedia, the Canadian Music Wiki, has been recognized by the SNCR Excellence in New Communications Awards.
The wiki, launched in May, won a Commendation of Merit in the co-creation and collaboration media category of the SNCR awards for 2010.
The prestigious awards program is sponsored by the Society for New Communications Research.
They honour individuals and organizations that are pioneering the use of social media and digital technologies in business, media, nonprofits/NGOs, education, government and technology.
The commendation was presented to CBC Radio 3 and the UBC Journalism School at the 5th Annual SNCR Research Symposium & Awards Gala held at Stanford University on November 4-5, 2010.
“We are honored to recognize the Canadian Music Wiki through this awards program,” said SNCR Senior Fellow Paul Gillin, chair of SNCR’s Excellence Awards committee.
The Society for New Communications Research is a research and education foundation and think tank focused on the advanced study of the latest developments in new media and communications, and their effect on traditional media, culture and society.
The music wiki was the result of a partnership between the UBC Journalism School and CBC Radio 3. It was created by UBC journalism graduate Amanda Ash as part of her Masters of Journalism degree, based on an idea by CBC Radio 3 director Steve Pratt and UBC journalism professor Alfred Hermida.
The wiki project was also a finalist in the 2010 Canadian Online Publishing Awards.
