About

Alex Migdal is an adjunct professor at the UBC School of Journalism, Writing and Media, where he co-teaches Decoding Social Media and trains students in professional social media skills for newsrooms.

Alex is currently a community editor at The Globe and Mail, overseeing the national newspaper’s vertical short-form video strategy and leading audience-engagement initiatives. Previously, he served as senior producer for social media and audience growth at CBC News, where he led Canada’s largest social media news team and oversaw the launch and growth of CBC News on TikTok to more than three million followers.

Alex has reported for newsrooms across Canada, including the Edmonton Journal, Guelph Mercury, and CBC Vancouver, where he spent five years as a reporter and social media producer. His work at the Guelph Mercury earned an Ontario Newspaper Award and the Goff Penny Award, one of Canada’s top honours for young print reporters.

A graduate of the UBC School of Journalism, Alex produced a SSHRC-funded project examining how the loss of community newspapers affects local democracies, and participated in the International Reporting Program, reporting on LGBTQ refugees in Turkey. He was awarded the Hal Straight Gold Medal in Journalism as the program’s most outstanding graduate.
