Ying Chan joins UBC Journalism as Canwest Visiting Professor



Ying ChanThe School of Journalism is pleased to announce that renowned journalist, writer and educator, Ying Chan will be joining the School as the Canwest Visiting Professor for the first semester of 2014.

With more than 20 years working as a journalist in New York, and as the founding director of the Journalism and Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, Chan brings a wealth of experience – as both a journalist and educator – to the role.

She has reported for NBC News, New York Daily News, as well as several Chinese language news outlets. She is also the co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong, a member board of the Media Development Loan Fund, as well as chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Informed Societies.

“We’re thrilled to have a Ying join the School,” said School of Journalism director Peter Klein. “Students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to not only learn from, but collaborate with a journalist of such exceptional caliber.”

Chan has received several awards and notable distinctions, inclining a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, the George Polk Award for Journalistic Excellence and the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists. In August 2013, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Asian American Journalists Association for her role as a journalism educator at both Shantou University and Hong Kong University.

Chan also serves on the Honorary Advisory Board of UBC’s new Global Reporting Centre project, which represents the first university-based centre focused exclusively on teaching and practicing global investigative and enterprise reporting.
