UBC student wins community newspaper award

The Graduate School of Journalism is pleased to announce that first-year M.J. candidate, Darren Fleet, is a winner of the B.C. Community Newspapers Association competition. He received the award on April 18.

Darren has a BA in history from Simon Fraser University and has written and photographed for community newspapers in Langley and Whistler, BC.

As an undergraduate student, he worked for three university publications and helped to create an independent newspaper, The Toque, at University College of the Fraser Valley.

His urban beat for the duration of his graduate education at UBC is Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Currently, Darren volunteers at Pivot Legal Society, producing a weekly podcast, and is also a volunteer tutor at the Downtown Eastside Education Centre.

Darren believes that a reporter should be close to his or her community of interest in order to represent issues accurately. His most recent work is a film satire on investigative journalism.
