UBC Journalism shines with 11 nods in 2024 Canadian Online Publishing Awards

Students and faculty have been recognized for their excellence in digital journalism with 11 nominations for the 2024 Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPAs).

The nominations across seven categories showcase the innovative storytelling and high-quality journalism produced by students taking the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media’s Master of Journalism program.

A documentary produced by the school’s Global Reporting Program in partnership with Al Jazeera is a finalist for best video.

Projects from the second-year visual journalism course are up for awards for best multicultural story, best feel-good story, best feature article, best video, and best photo journalism.

Stories by first-year Master’s students for UBC Journalism’s TheThunderbird.ca are nominated in the best multicultural story, best feel-good story, and best video categories.

The nominations are rounded off by a best podcast nod for a student podcast and a best blog/column nomination for Professor Alfred Hermida for his articles on the future of journalism in Canada.

Last year, students and faculty took home one gold and four COPAs. The winners for 2024 will be announced in February.
