Prof. Peter Klein and Prof. Alfred Hermida have been named among the Top 50 Journalism Professors in 2012 by the online publication JournalismDegree.org.
Klein and Hermida were the only two journalism professors from Canadian Universities named on the list. The other 48 professors recognized teach at journalism departments in the United States.
Klein is the Acting Director of the UBC Graduate School of Journalism and the Director of the International Reporting Program. He has been recognized for his 60 Minutes investigation into the former Soviet Union’s smallpox weapons program, which won an Emmy in 2000, as well as his shared Emmy in 1996 for a documentary on global health.
He is also the creator and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated History Channel series Beyond Top Secret. Klein is currently working on a book for St. Martin’s Press about the domestic war on terror in the United States, and directing a feature-length documentary about global access to medicine.
Hermida is an Associate Professor of the UBC Graduate School of Journalism. Before coming to the School of Journalism, he worked for 16 years at the BBC where he was founding news editor of the BBC News website. His team at BBC won four British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards for the best news site. Hermida was recently recognized as one of Canada’s top social media mavens in the 2011 Digi Awards.
