In quick succession, CanWest visiting professor Robert Cribb gained nominations from both the Canadian Association of Journalists and the Michener Awards for outstanding investigative journalism.
Along with the Toronto Star’s Dale Brazao and Andrew Bailey, Cribb was nominated by the CAJ for the series “Dirty Little Secrets,” which exposed abuse in daycares. It took the reporters more than two years of investigation and numerous freedom of information requests to gather the facts for the story. Less than 24 hours after the story was published, the information was made public on the Ministry of Children and Youth Services website.
Cribb is also a finalist, along with Tanya Talaga, for another of the country’s top journalism honours — the Michener Award for public service journalism. The Toronto Star series, “Medical Secrets,” investigated errors in Ontario hospitals and by medical professionals. Following publication, the province announced reforms to boost public access to information on adverse events in the medical system.
Congratulations to Professor Cribb on these remarkable achievements. More information about both awards can be found on the Toronto Star website.
