UBC School of Journalism congratulates our new visiting assistant professor David Rummel, outgoing senior producer for The New York Times, for winning the prestigious Alfred I. duPont Silver Baton Award.
Prof. Rummel worked with documentary filmmakers Brent and Craig Renaud to show the human toll of the Haitian earthquake. Under Prof. Rummel’s guidance, the filmmakers produced the 11-minute long digital story “Surviving Haiti’s Earthquake: Children,” about two injured children, documenting their lives from the time of their rescue through the first year of recovery.
The DuPont jury said “the Renauds succeeded in transmitting the painful experience of these two children as they struggle to heal, ending with an uncertainty that is authentic, moving and profound.”
Prof. Rummel has spent the past nine and a half years as senior producer at the digital video unit of The New York Times. Prior to that, he worked as a senior investigative producer at ABC News and NBC News, and a producer at CBS News 60 Minutes. This is his fourth DuPont Award.
The DuPont Silver Baton is awarded by Columbia University to exceptional works of broadcast journalism. “This is arguably the most prestigious and coveted award in US broadcast journalism,” said Prof. Peter W. Klein, acting director of the UBC School of Journalism, “and we are extremely fortunate to have a journalist of Dave’s calibre join our faculty.”
The award was announced just as Prof. Rummel completed his move to Vancouver, where he recently joined the faculty of the UBC School of Journalism. He will be teaching broadcast and digital journalism, as well participating in the award-winning International Reporting Program.
