Inspire UBC journalism students as the next Asper Visiting Professor



The UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media is accepting applicants for the position of Asper Visiting Professor for 2025-2026 to join its high-calibre journalism faculty and students.

The School is a recognized leader in journalism education, research and practice. It currently offers a Master of Journalism degree and a Minor in Journalism and Social Change.

The successful candidate will have professional and teaching experience in contemporary and emerging fields of journalism, complementing and enhancing the School’s core strengths in digital, international, Indigenous, social change and public policy journalism.

We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in digital journalism, or in entrepreneurship and media innovation in particular.

The purpose of the Asper Visiting Professor position is to provide students with additional opportunities to learn from professionals from the field of journalism. The appointment provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to think about and teach journalistic themes and issues.

We provide office space and administrative support, a robust research setting with high-quality graduate and undergraduate students, as well as contact with other professors in the School, at UBC, and in neighbouring universities.

The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media is committed to research, pedagogy and practice that responds to and addresses historic inequities and therefore welcomes applicants who would contribute to our ongoing efforts to create an open and diverse community.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching and mentoring journalism students at a graduate level. The candidate will be selected by a hiring committee composed of the School’s director and faculty.

  • The Visiting Professor is expected to be in Vancouver for the duration of their contract. The duration of the appointment can range from one to two terms.
  • The journalist will participate in teaching during the 2025-2026 academic year (either in both terms, or in Term 1: September to December or Term 2: January to April). Priority will be given to applicants who can teach one of our existing courses or propose a new course in an area of their expertise that complements our curriculum at the graduate level.
  • Applicants are expected to interact with students and may be asked to deliver one public talk or run an advanced-level workshop in an area of journalism practice for our students.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Substantial experience in journalism across platforms (print, broadcast and digital)
  • A proven record of editorial leadership in the field of journalism
  • Exceptional storytelling skills that integrate text, video, photo, graphics and data
  • A passion for training the next generation of journalists at a time of significant change in the media
  • A track record of working in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Capacity to contribute to a technology-enriched and community-engaged educational setting
