Scholars and journalists gathered at UBC Robson Square to explore artificial intelligence’s transformative impact on journalism and media as the UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media marked its Master of Journalism program’s 25th year.
The event on October 9, titled “AI in Our World: Shaping Media, Science, and Education”, explored the practical side of AI, its promise and peril, and how it impacts necessary skills for the future in media, education, and science.

The AI in Our World: Shaping Media, Education, and Science panel
Moderated by JWAM Director, Dr. Kamal Al-Solaylee, the expert panel of speakers included MJ alumna and science journalist Nicola Jones, Asst. Professor Saranaz Barforoush, and Professor Alfred Hermida.
They examined how newsrooms and journalists can use AI technologies while navigating ethical challenges and maintaining journalistic integrity.
While highlighting the opportunities for AI to enhance reporting, writing and editing, they all emphasized the continued importance of human judgment in journalism.
