UBC Journalism professor Alfred Hermida has been recognized for his transformative work in guiding graduate students and fostering the careers of early-career academics.
Hermida has been named as a recipient of the 2025 Dean of Arts Mentorship award at the University of British Columbia for his outstanding commitment to “tremendous contributions to mentoring the next generation of scholars.”
“Mentoring the next generation of scholars and media professionals is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work,” said Hermida.
“Seeing my students grow, thrive and achieve their goals inspires me. I’m honoured to play a role in nurturing their talents and helping them discover their unique potential.”
“Exceptional passion”
Hermida’s dedication to mentoring has had a profound impact on his students, who consistently praise his ability to nurture their talents and guide them toward success as academics and media professionals.
“Professor Hermida demonstrates an exceptional passion for providing mentees with opportunities to pursue and accomplish what we didn’t think was possible,” said UBC Journalism alumna, Catherine Zhu, who led the nomination.
“He sees, believes in and points out our strengths and potential. In doing so, he helps us discover and fulfill our unique purpose.
A former BBC journalist, Professor Hermida has been with the UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media since 2006, where he helps shape future journalists and media professionals.
“Like all great teachers, he understands that his influence on students’ intellectual and professional development extends beyond the classroom,” said Kamal Al-Solaylee, professor and director of the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media.
“This often-additional and sometimes-unacknowledged work is an investment in the next generation of thinkers and in the future of journalism and media studies.”
Hermida will be able to celebrate the recognition with his mentees at a faculty-sponsored dinner.
