Join us on November 29th for an insightful talk as Dr. Jennifer Cowe delves into her upcoming publication in the Handbook of George Orwell (OUP 2025).
This presentation will explore the complex relationship between Orwell and Miller, highlighting how Miller’s legacy has been shaped through Orwell’s reviews and his inclusion in Inside the Whale ( 1940). Discover the nuances of Orwell’s conflicting views on Miller’s works, from admiration for Tropic of Cancer (1934) to criticism of Miller’s later writing and apolitical stance during WWII. Dr. Cowe proposes that these responses reveal more about Orwell’s reflections on his own writing and politics than a genuine discourse on Miller.
