UBC Journalism students and faculty have received seven nominations in the 2023 Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA) which recognize excellence in digital media.
The reporting on rice farmers in Southeast Asia’s Mekong Basin by students and faculty in the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media’s Global Reporting Program is a finalist for best video and best feature.
Student projects from the visual journalism course are up for best multicultural story, best feel good story, best video and best photo journalism.
Nominated for best blog/column are Professors Alfred Hermida and Mary Lynn Young for their op-ed for The Conversation Canada on the dispute over Bill C-18, the Online News Act.
“Compelling storytelling across platforms”
The COPAs, which are now in their 15th year, describe themselves as “the largest digital publishing industry showcase.”
“I’m proud of the quality of work that our students are producing and the vast expertise of our instructors,” says Professor Kamal Al-Solaylee, director of the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media.
“The nominated pieces showcase compelling storytelling across platforms, locations and vantage points. The local and global meet in these stories, which is one of our strengths as a journalism school.”
Last year, students and faculty took home four gold and two silver awards. Students won gold for best podcast, best photo journalism, best video and best feel good story. The two silver wins were for best photo journalism and best local community news/sports.
