Free and open communication is what gives democracy its power, and vice versa. This interdependence brings people together and welcomes multiple discourses. However, as idealistic as it seems, a threat to one is a threat to the other, and both are vulnerable to internal and external manipulations. The spread of disinformation is growing at an alarming rate across the globe, threatening democratic communication.
Dr. Thorsten Quandt’s current project studies the hybridized digital perpetuation of disinformation through human and automated ‘dark participation’. As Visiting Scholar from The University of Münster, Dr. Quandt will offer valuable insight into strategies of manipulation founded upon decade-long empirical studies, and evaluate their relation to sociopolitical narratives. By assessing large-scale analyses of information flows in Germany, he will discuss potential remedies against disinformation for open and democratic societies.
This is an in-person, public event; all are welcome and no registration is required.
