With more than 20 years working as a journalist in New York, and as the founding director of the Journalism and Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, Chan brings a wealth of experience – as both a journalist and educator – to the role.
She has reported for NBC News, New York Daily News, as well as several Chinese language news outlets. She is also the co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong, a member board of the Media Development Loan Fund, as well as chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Informed Societies.
“We’re thrilled to have a Ying join the School,” said School of Journalism director Peter Klein. “Students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to not only learn from, but collaborate with a journalist of such exceptional caliber.”
Chan has received several awards and notable distinctions, inclining a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, the George Polk Award for Journalistic Excellence and the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists. In August 2013, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Asian American Journalists Association for her role as a journalism educator at both Shantou University and Hong Kong University.
Chan also serves on the Honorary Advisory Board of UBC’s new Global Reporting Centre project, which represents the first university-based centre focused exclusively on teaching and practicing global investigative and enterprise reporting.
