UBC Journalism takes home two Jack Webster Awards



UBC Journalism student Jordan Wade has won a Jack Webster Foundation Student Journalism Award for 2012, which recognizes those who have demonstrated their dedication to the profession of journalism.

Wade is a second-year Master of Journalism student who specializes in arts and cultural stories, sociology and urban planning.

Jordan Wade picked up one of the student Webster Awards

He was born in Toronto, and after his radio and television degree at Ryerson, he spent the next few years in a variety of communication-related positions in both Canada and abroad, including time spent as a promotions rep in Australia, an English teacher in Korea and a radio host/reporter in Kelowna, B.C. This past summer, Wade freelanced for CBC at the Olympic Games in London.

UBC Journalism Alumna Cheryl Chan (‘06) also won a Webster Award for her role in the in-depth, 14-part series “Boomerangst,” which was published in The Province.

The series explores the challenges facing B.C.’s aging population. “Boomerangst” was nominated for a National Newspaper Award earlier this year.

UBC Journalism faculty and alumni were also nominated for Jack Webster Awards.

Adjunct Professor Duncan McCue and Alumna Jodie Martinson (’10) were nominated for their radio feature “Aboriginal Futures,” which aired on CBC Radio One’s Spark and focused on coverage of Aboriginal people embracing a digital future. They were nominated in the Science, Technology, Health and Environment category.

Francis Bula, this year’s Canwest Visiting Professor at the School of Journalism, was also nominated, for her Vancouver Magazine piece “How I Lost My Mother to Alzheimer’s.” Her story chronicles her personal experience with her mother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, a disease that affects an estimated 70,000 people in B.C. alone. Bula was nominated in the Best Feature Story, Print category.

Journalism Professor Alfred Hermida was also one of the judges for the multimedia award.

The Jack Webster Foundation was established in 1986 in honour of longtime newspaper, radio and television reporter Jack Webster, with the goal of recognizing and encouraging excellence in B.C.-based journalism.

The Jack Webster Awards ceremony took place on November 1, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Vancouver.
