Congratulations to all the students in the Class of 2021. The Master of Journalism class of 2021 is a diverse cohort, comprising of students from India, Yemen, Pakistan, El Salvador, Nigeria, Bahamas, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. Some joined us with previous master’s degrees, and others with undergraduate degrees from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including political science, English literature, mass communications, graphic and communications design, international relations, media sciences, journalism, information technology, economics, humanities, film and media, political studies, engineering, and molecular biology.

As part of the journalism program, our students went on to complete internships at various news media outlets across the country and abroad such as The Tyee, The Narwhal, The Globe and Mail, CBC Toronto, The Discourse, DailyHive Vancouver, Zoe Elle Co, Vancouver Whitecaps, Maisonneuve Magazine and Quartz India.

Students were honoured with awards at the annual Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA) in recognition of their excellence in reporting and producing digital stories. They were also awarded at this year’s Emerge Media Awards in the audio storytelling and written word categories. Students were also part of courses such as Imagine Journalism, Reporting in Indigenous Communities, Global Reporting Program and the Investigative Journalism program in collaboration with the Institute for Investigative Journalism, housed at Concordia University.

Their works have highlighted various important issues such as body disposals in B.C., First Nations responding and adapting to climate change, concerns around increasing tanker traffic in Vancouver and facilitating conversations about being LGBTQ+ in South Asian communities, The cohort also extensively covered the 2019 federal elections for The Thunderbird and fact-checked the 2019 English-language federal leaders’ debate.

On behalf of the entire School of Journalism, Writing, and Media, we congratulate this year’s Master of Journalism graduates! We hope that you had a positive experience, cultivated lifelong relationships and are prepared for the next steps in your career.
