Free an d open communication is what gives democracy its power\, and vice versa. Th is interdependence brings people together and welcomes multiple discourses. However\, as idealistic as it seems\, a threat to one is a threat to the o ther\, and both are vulnerable to internal and external manipulations. The spread of disinformation is growing at an alarming rate across the globe\, threatening democratic communication.
Dr. Thorsten Quandt's current p roject studies the hybridized digital perpetuation of disinformation throug h human and automated 'dark participation’. As Visiting Scholar from The Un iversity of Münster\, Dr. Quandt will offer valuable insight into strategie s of manipulation founded upon decade-long empirical studies\, and evaluate their relation to sociopolitical narratives. By assessing large-scale anal yses of information flows in Germany\, he will discuss potential remedies a gainst disinformation for open and democratic societies.
