The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia invites applications for an inaugural Visiting Journalist in Forestry.
This position is open to journalists with a focus on forestry-related issues who wish to spend one to two weeks in a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment with high calibre journalism faculty and students in Vancouver.
Forestry topics may include, but are not limited to Indigenous and community forestry, modern forest sustainability projects and the impact of crises like the pine beetle infestation and sawmill closures on rural communities.
Other topics may include research into timber materials and products, timber and sustainable buildings, and innovative applications of timber.
The Visiting Journalist will be expected to come to Vancouver for one to two weeks during the January – April 2017 term to conduct a workshop open to all UBC students, participate in existing courses at the School of Journalism, hold office hours for individual meetings with students and deliver a public talk raising the profile of forestry-related issues.
The School of Journalism provides office space and administrative support, a robust research setting with high quality Master’s students and contact with other professors in the School, at UBC, and in neighbouring universities. The School will cover the cost of travel and accommodation for the Visiting Journalist, together with an honorarium.
